I am Sinéad and I am an accredited Play Therapist and Registered SandStory® Therapist. With more than 25 years of experience in education, I have worked extensively with individuals, small groups of children and young people, as well as their parents. Additionally, my 10 years as an accredited Play Therapist has enriched my current practice. I have worked therapeutically with children experiencing emotional difficulties in a range of areas, such as, anger management, anxiety, school refusal, low self-esteem, peer group difficulties, family separation, domestic violence, isolation, bullying and bereavement and loss. I have experience working with children who are fostered or adopted and I am trained in Trauma Informed Practice. I help empower children to build resilience and find their voice. I fully believe that honouring ‘The voice of the child’ within a child-centred non-directive play environment enables the child to make sense of their world. My goal is to support children and their parents through a welcoming environment.

“When little people are overwhelmed by big emotions, it’s our job to share our calm, not join their chaos.” L.R. Knost

Areas of Specialism and Focus

Neurodivergence

I have extensive experience working with children and young people who have Autism, ADHD and Mutism, providing support and understanding suited to their unique emotional and sensory needs.

Anxiety

I help with anxiety that presents itself in various forms and situations, providing support, play and strategies to manage and to explore those feelings effectively.

Relational and Attachment Issues

I work with relational and attachment issues that can often present in children, affecting their emotional development, social interactions, family and peer relationships.

Self-esteem and Confidence

I help support children and young people who are struggling with low self-esteem, providing them with the necessary tools and guidance to build their confidence and improve their overall well-being.

My Therapeutic Approach

Person-Centred Therapy

I treat each individual I work with respect, maintaining appropriate boundaries and by offering a non-judgemental space.

Play Therapy

I provide Play Therapy for children and young people aged between 4-16yrs.  Children learn to express themselves metaphorically through play. They learn to make choices, take control, risk take/problem solve and experiment within the realms of a safe therapeutic environment. Play Therapy can help build resilience skills and develop confidence and self-esteem in children. Children can become more emotionally literate and develop a greater self-awareness.

SandStory Therapy

For children from age 8yrs upwards and teens. It is a creative approach offering therapeutic support via sand and symbols within the safety of a non-judgemental relationship. It is a creative approach for children/young people who may find talking about their experiences difficult. The child/young person takes the lead and the therapist gently guides the experience to enable the child to develop a greater sense of self-awareness through reflection.
